Like a Game of ‘Simon Says’, But Waaay More
Welcome back to our delightful corner of the internet, where we often find ourselves laughing, crying, and everything in between. Today, let’s dive into the timeless wisdom of following and sharing only authentic reports about our Prophet Muhammad (salallaahu alayhi wasallam). Following the Prophet (salallaahu alayhi wasallam) is more than just a game of ‘Simon Says’. So grab a cup of chai, or maybe a cheeky piece of baklava (we won’t tell!) (and it’s halal!), and let’s get started!
We all know that when it comes to parenting, it can be a lot of “Don’t eat that!” or “Wear this!” or “Go study!” It’s a never-ending saga of Do’s and Don’ts. And our kids might often wonder why they can’t just live their lives without all these rules. But, just as we guide our children with rules for their own good, the Prophet Muhammad’s (salallaahu alayhi wasallam) teachings guide us towards the right path.
We know that Allaah has said, “Whatever the messenger gives you, you should accept and whatever he forbids you, you should reject.” The Messenger of Allaah (salallaahu alayhi wasallam) was basically the closest being to Allaah, the one Allaah described as an “excellent example”, and the one who was forgiven his past and future sins. When he suggested something, it was not because he was on a power trip or because he wanted to ruin your party. Nope! He’s like the ultimate GPS for our spiritual journey, and when the GPS says, “Turn left,” you don’t go right unless you fancy ending up in a metaphorical ditch. So remember, ladies, next time your kiddos complain about the rules, just say, “Rules are the shortest path to Paradise, honey!” And let’s remember the same for ourselves.
The Prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wasallam) Says
Take the example of when the Prophet (salallaahu alayhi wasallam) said: “Pray as you have seen me praying.” Can you imagine trying to mimic someone else’s workouts or gymnastics moves without a YouTube tutorial? We’d probably end up looking like a cross between a pretzel and a flamingo! Without guidance or an example to follow, we are sure to be lost. That’s why we need to pause and ponder. How many YouTube influencers do we follow? Many of us do what they say and take their recommendations super-seriously. But doesn’t our Prophet (salallaahu alayhi wasallam) outshine any and every YouTube influencer? Doesn’t he deserve to be followed more than any other human being? And he didn’t just show us how to pray; he demonstrated a spiritual connection that’s more satisfying than the best chocolate dessert (yes, even that triple fudge one you’re thinking of!).
(Side thought: How often do we run to that triple fudge chocolate dessert when prayer will satisfy us more?)
To follow the Prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wasallam) more and to make prayer time fun with the kiddos, let’s reinvent the game of ‘Simon Says’ as ‘The Prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wasallam) Says’. It’s played the same way but with eternal rewards!
Playing ‘Telephone’ with the Prophet’s (sallallaahu alayhi wasallam) teachings
A word of caution before we conclude. The Prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wasallam) said, “Let whoever deliberately lies about me take his seat in the Hellfire.” This one’s a heavy hitter, isn’t it? But, let me explain it using another game. Have you ever played a game of ‘Telephone’ with the kids? The first person whispers a sentence, and by the end of the line, it’s turned into something hilariously unrecognizable. This hadith cautions against playing ‘Telephone’ with the Prophet’s (sallallaahu alayhi wasallam) teachings. Misquoting him is not just a game of whispers gone wrong; it can be a one-way ticket to the hottest hot seat!
